Hollie’s a work of art for Hamilton Park Racecourse

THE winning design in a competition to produce a specially commissioned piece of art for Hamilton Park Racecourse has been unveiled.

Students from New Lanarkshire College’s HNC Art and Design course were invited to submit proposals for a mural to go on display in the premier Lanarkshire venue’s grandstand.

And this week judges from Hamilton Park Racecourse announced the winning entrant as 18-year-old Hollie Jamieson.

Hollie’s design will take pride of place in the tunnel connecting the lawns and park area to the trackside of the course.

Her piece draws on a number of elements of the racecourse experience, including the glitz and glamour of Ladies’ Night, the elegance of Hamilton Park’s wedding packages, the unique buttonhook layout of the course and the drama of racing.

Vivien Currie, Chief Executive at Hamilton Park Racecourse, said: “We were most impressed with the quality of entries and the creativity shown by the students. It was a very difficult decision, especially given the different styles used.

“We loved the drama and detail of Hollie’s design and how it incorporated multiple elements and interpretations of the racecourse experience.

“We particularly liked the way it draws your eye in and we found ourselves seeing something new each time we looked at it.”

Work will now begin to re-create the art-work to take pride of place in the tunnel in the grandstand for years to come.

The project was written into the curriculum of the HNC course and as well as having the honour of having her work displayed at the course Hollie will also pick-up £250.

Kelly Cunningham, Art and Design Lecturer at New College Lanarkshire, said: “I am delighted that Hollie’s work will be on show for people from Lanarkshire and beyond.

“All the students taking part in the project overcame the challenge of incorporating elements of Hamilton Park Racecourse’s heritage while staying true to their own artistic style – and produced amazing results.

“The quality and diversity of the work produced by our HNC students was excellent and something we strive for in the Art and Design curriculum area of New College Lanarkshire.”

As well as Hollie’s winning entry the Hamilton Park Racecourse executive also chose entries from Gareth Truesdale, 25, and Robert Puzewicz, 32, as runners-up and they will both take away £100 each.
