AUSTRIAN THEORY was a surprise winner of the feature race at Hamilton Park on Tuesday for Mark and Charlie Johnston and Joe Fanning.
Sent off at 14-1, he travelled strongly on his way to seeing off the short-priced favourite Ghaly by half a length in the £30,000 Stay At Hampton By Hilton Almada Mile Handicap.
The following handicap over a mile and a half was abandoned due to reports of horses slipping on the bend and the final two events on the straight course were staged half an hour later than advertised.
Johnston was also successful with Spy, who was ridden to victory by Jason Hart in the Book Our On-Site Hotel Ferniegair Handicap.
The Kingsley House trainer said: “It wasn’t that much of a surprise to me as he was highly tried on turf on his recent runs this season. He had a drop in class today and I was glad a gap appeared as I thought he was going to get trapped on the rails.”
