It all started bang on time at 2pm on 16th July 1926 when 9/2 chance Impress won the Cambusnethan Handicap over a mile and, exactly 100 years later, racing on the current Bothwell Road site at Hamilton Park is still going strong. The centenary season at the South Lanarkshire venue continues with the £30,000 Wellman Cars Private Hire Almada Mile Handicap as the feature race on the opening card of a two-day meeting. Last year’s easy winner Sallaal has since impressed in a handicap on Oaks Day at Epsom and recently followed up in Listed company at Sandown. The top-weight is English Oak, trained in Newmarket by Hamad Al Jehani, who is two from two with his Hamilton Park runners thanks to wins last month from Diego Ventura and Royal Heritage. English Oak was beaten two-lengths by Sallaal twelve months ago when trained by Ed Walker and bids to go one better for his new connections. Karl Burke-trained I’ll Be Back could go close as he puts his unbeaten record on the line as he steps up in trip for his handicap debut. Locally-trained Sixcor bids to land the Wellman Cars Hamilton Handicap for the second year running. Linda Perratt’s stable is just a few miles away near East Kilbride and he hasn’t scored since last year’s narrow success off a similar mark.
